Judocracy Inspiration 3 – Squamish Nation Writ of Claim
June 30, 2006
There is that old Chinese saying, “May you live in interesting times.” We can safely say that these times are ‘interesting’, to say the least.
In the case of this Writ, submitted by Hereditary Chief Kiapilano of the Squamish Nation, it is literally going to be a watershed in land claims negotiations.
This writ was submitted on behalf of the Squamish Nation people as they had learned that the Band Chiefs were about to sell off some more of their territory (See Judocracy Inspiration 2), when leasing was not only the preferred method for two key reasons:
1) The Squamish Nation would retain all of the rights guaranteed by the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and the Indian Act; and
2) With a 99-Year lease, the Nation would make quite a bit of money as well as the leased property reverting back to the Nation at the end of the lease.
Curiously, the Band Council got wind of this Writ and filed their own Writ a couple of days later, with a significantly reduced map of the Nation. It kinda makes you wonder who they’re working for…
So, for your inspection, please see the different pages of the Writ:
